Economic Development in South Asia

Overview

The objective of this course is to introduce the students to the theory of economic development and its implications, with an emphasis on South Asian economy. The first part, which will be covered before mid-term exam, includes the measurement of development, institutional factors, economic models, construction of economic models from empirical data, and some advanced topics such as dummy variables and regime shift. The second part will be covered after the mid-term, which comprises South Asian economic issues, such as SAARC, SAFTA, the investment climate of South Asia, relationship with superpowers and its impact on South Asia’s economy, and the impact of stock market on real economy. The concluding chapter will present a critical comparison of Bangladesh with Pakistan in terms of various development related issues.
